As we practice social distancing, there are still ways to be a part of Earth Day, April 22. And while we can’t participate in beach clean-ups, Dive Against Debris, and coral restoration projects during this time, there are other things we can do to show we care.
Here are five ways you can do your part to protect our planet and make it a little cleaner – without ever leaving the house.
-
Recycle
We all know that recycling is important. But there’s a method to achieve the proper recycling program. Different areas have different restrictions, but the general way to recycle your used items includes:
- Plastic, Glass, and Cans – Cleaned from food and debris
- Cardboard and Paper – Folded up and broken down
Wild Card: Pizza boxes are NOT recyclable. In many areas, pizza boxes are not recyclable due to the grease and food that can’t be removed from the cardboard so that it can be broken down and recycled.
-
Reuse
What do you do with all those extra boxes and containers from your Amazon deliveries? Give them an upgrade by wrapping them in a decorative paper or fabric. Then you’ll have a ready-to-go organizer for household items like cleaning products, dog toys, or pantry items.
-
Soup it Up
Not sure what to do with the vegetables or produce that is about to expire? Toss them in a slow cooker or an Instant Pot, add a few cups of chicken or vegetable broth, some of your favorite spices, and you’ll have a comforting soup that’s ready to roll alongside a lunchtime sandwich or a side of chicken or fish.
Wild Card: If the ingredients are pet-friendly, add a spoonful to your dog’s dish for a little extra flavor and nutrients.
-
Multiply the Supply
Kitchen sponges should be tossed every week or so. Make the most out of your inventory by cutting your sponges in half – or into threes. Cutting sponges will not only triple your supply of sponges, but you’ll also find that you’ll be more mindful of rotating them out regularly. Plus, you’ll save a little extra cash in your pocketbook, too.
-
Clear out the Closet
There’s no better time than now to clear out the clutter from your closet. Find items you don’t use anymore and donate them to a local shelter. Your closet (and wardrobe) will get a refresh, and your used items can benefit others in need.
Do you have any at-home tips to protect the planet? Share them on Facebook and tag PADI. When we all come together, we can make a big difference. And hopefully, our world will heal a little more each day.
