PADI® Instructor Alex Rendell is well-known in Thailand as an actor and singer, but he also has a Master in Environmental Social Science. Alex uses his fame to be a voice for the ocean and his list of eco-accomplishments may soon outnumber his film and television credits.

In 2019, Alex was a keynote speaker for the United Nations’ Environment Programme SEA of Solutions. The initiative promotes tangible, innovative solutions to the problem of marine plastic pollution in Southeast Asia.

We’re honoured to welcome Alex as a new PADI AmbassaDiver™ for 2020. He recently took time out of his (insanely) busy schedule to tell us about his latest project and what it’s like to deliver a speech for the United Nations.

Tell us about your latest initiative, the KodpaKodTalay project…

KodpaKodTalay (กอดป่า กอดทะเล) is a nonprofit edutainment project. The name translates directly to “Hug Forest Hug Ocean.” Our aim is to help anyone who’s interested in conservation get involved.
กอดป่ากอดทะเลเป็นโครงการการเรียนรู้เชิงบังเทิง หรือ Edutainment ที่ไม่หวังผลกำไร โครงการนี้พยายามจะให้ใครก็ตามที่สนใจเรื่องการอนุรักษ์เข้ามามีส่วนร่วม
The idea is, no matter where you go around Thailand, locals can take part in environmental education. The platform will have different content for each location, and continue to produce new content over time.
แนวคิดหลักคือไม่ว่าคุณจะเดินทางไปที่ไหนในประเทศไทย ชุมชนในพื้นที่สามารถมีส่วนร่วมในการให้ความรู้เกี่ยวกับสิ่งแวดล้อมได้ โครงการประกอบไปด้วยเนื้อหาที่หลากหลายตามแต่พื้นที่ และจะมีเนื้อหาใหม่ๆ ผลิตออกมาตลอด
We recently met with the governor of Krabi and local leaders there. Everyone plans to join in. We’re gaining support from government authorities throughout Thailand, including The Tourism Authority of Thailand.

How is KodpaKodTalay different from your other conservation efforts?
โครงการดอกป่ากอดทะเลแตกต่างจากโครงการอนุรักษ์ที่ผ่านมาของคุณอย่างไร
Usually our educational camps include 50-200 students who come from large cities. This project will be available to more than 1000 students at a time and involve people from different areas.

Tell us about your speech writing process. How do you decide what to say?

Every time I commit to public speaking, the preparation process is always challenging, especially for the United Nations. I aim to speak from the heart and only speak about my personal experiences; it’s what makes me most comfortable and it prevents me from trying to seem like something I am not.

What does your internal self-talk sound like when you’re on stage?
ตอนที่อยู่บนเวที คุณบอกอะไรกับตัวเองบ้าง
The key is to practice in advance and relax. When I feel nervous it’s because I didn’t prepare well enough, but over-practicing can also be harmful. So, for me, I just try to relax and let what I prepared do the work!
สิ่งสำคัญคือการซ้อมล่วงหน้าและทำใจให้สบาย ทุกครั้งที่ผมตื่นเต้น ก็มักเกิดจากการที่ไม่ได้เตรียมตัวเพียงพอ แต่การซ้อมมากเกินไปก็อันตรายเหมือนกัน ดังนั้นสำหรับตัวผม ผมพยายามจะทำใจให้สบายและเชื่อในสิ่งที่เราซ้อมและเตรียมตัวมา
Tell us about the special honour you received from the Swedish Embassy.
ช่วยเล่าให้เราฟังเกี่ยวกับรางวัลที่คุณได้รับจากสถานเอกอัครข้าราชทูตสวีเดน
It was a great opportunity to meet his excellency the ambassador of Sweden in Thailand. His team invited us into the embassy as they were aware of what EEC and I were doing. It was a great honour to be recognised.

Tell us about your work as BRAND brand ambassador…
บทบาทในฐานะ ตัวแทนสินค้าของแบรนด์ เป็นอย่างไรบ้าง
I am the brand ambassador for BRAND’s Essence of Chicken. It’s a great honour to represent a brand that I have known my whole life and to become the face of such a well-known organisation. They feature my conservation work in their commercials, which no one has really done before. It’s a very humble experience for me to work with Brands Suntory.
ผมได้รับเลือกให้เป็นตัวแทนสินค้าของซุปไก่สกัดยี่ห้อแบรนด์ นับเป็นเกียรติอย่างยิ่งที่ได้นำเสนอสินค้าที่ผู้รู้จักมาตั้งแต่เด็ก และได้เป็นตัวแทนขององค์การที่เป็นที่รู้จักแพร่หลาย งานด้านการอนุรักษ์ของผมถูกนำไปเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของโฆษณาสินค้าด้วย ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่ไม่เคยมีใครคิดจะทำมาก่อน โอกาสครั้งนี้ถือเป็นประสบการณ์ที่ผมรู้สึกขอบพระคุณอย่างมาก
How do you find time to do all of these amazing things?
คุณมีวิธีการจัดสรรเวลาอย่างไรที่ทำให้สามารถจัดการกับงานทุกด้านได้อย่างดี
Finding the time to do it is manageable, but finding the time to sleep is a little harder! But I believe that success comes from hard work and a good team, and I have the greatest team!
การหาเวลาทำสิ่งต่างๆ นั้นเป็นสิ่งที่บริหารจัดการได้ แต่การหาเวลานอนนั้นทำยากกว่านิดหน่อย แต่ผมเชื่อว่าความสำเร็จนั้นได้มาจากการทำงานหนักและการมีทีมงานที่ดี และผมมีทีมงานที่ยอดเยี่ยมมาก
How does being a PADI AmbassaDiver support your goals?
การเป็น PADI AmbassaDiver จะช่วยให้คุณเข้าใกล้เป้าหมายของคุณอย่างไร
For me, there is no higher honour for a scuba diver than a PADI AmbassaDiver, truly! Over the years, I felt uncertainty about how people perceive what we do. There are many who question us because not many organisations [in Thailand] take students out in the forest and underwater, but now I feel that has changed. People understand us more and are very supportive.
I’ve received many nice messages and support from the diving community which strengthens what we do. When an organisation like PADI recognises you, it’s a massive boost and motivation to go forward. Now our organisation will be exposed to many more people.
สำหรับผม การเป็น PADI AmbassaDiver นั้นถือว่าเป็นเกียรติสูงสุดของผมในฐานะนักดำน้ำแบบ SCUBA จริงๆ หลายปีที่ผ่านมา บางทีผมเองก็ไม่ค่อยแน่ใจว่าสาธารณชนเข้าใจและรับรู้สิ่งที่เราทำในทางใดบ้าง หลายคนอาจจะสงสัยในสิ่งที่เราทำ มีไม่กี่องค์กร (ในเมืองไทย) ที่พานักเรียนไปเข้าป่าหรือไปดำน้ำในทะเล แต่ตอนนี้ผมเห็นว่าสิ่งต่างๆ เปลี่ยนไปแล้ว ผู้คนเริ่มเข้าใจมากขึ้นว่าเรากำลังทำอะไร และให้การสนับสนุนมากขึ้นด้วย
ผมได้รับข้อความที่น่ารักมากจากชุมชนนักดำน้ำ ที่ส่งมาเพื่อสนับสนุนสิ่งที่เราทำ และเมื่อ PADI ให้ความสำคัญกับสิ่งที่เราทำ ผมรู้สึกว่าเป็นกำลังใจอย่างมากที่จะทำสิ่งนี้ต่อไป ตอนนี้องค์กรของเราสามารถเข้าถึงคนจำนวนมากขึ้นอย่างมากทีเดียว
Out of everything you’ve done (so far) which accomplishment are you most proud of?
จากสิ่งที่คุณทำมาทั้งหมด (จนถึงวันนี้) ความสำเร็จอะไรที่คุณภูมิใจมากที่สุด
Being an AmbassaDiver is definitely one of them. I remember the first day I experienced life underwater. Since then, I knew I wanted to do something related to scuba diving.
After founding EEC, I decided to take the instructor course from Kru Louis Malaiwongs. It was probably one of the best decisions I made. Kru Louis was the first Thai AmbassaDiver; I remember him showing me the video he did with PADI and I thought being an AmbassaDiver was way out of my league. To be one today is quite special.
การได้รับเลือกเป็น AmbassaDiver เป็นหนึ่งในคำตอบแน่นอน ผมยังจำวันแรกที่ได้สัมผัสกับการดำน้ำได้ดี ตั้งแต่ตอนนั้นผมก็รู้เลยว่าอยากทำอะไรเกี่ยวกับการดำน้ำ
หลังจากตั้ง EEC ผมไปเรียน Instructor Development Course กับครูหลุยส์ (คุณราชันย์ มาลัยวงศ์) ผมว่านั่นคือการตัดสินใจที่ถูกต้องที่สุดในชีวิตของผมอย่างหนึ่งเลย ครูหลุยส์เป็น AmbassaDiver คนไทยคนแรก ผมจำได้ว่าครูหลุยส์ให้ผมดูวีดีโอที่ทำกับ PADI ตอนนั้นผมรู้สึกว่าการเป็น AmbassaDiver นั้นไกลเกินเอื้อม พอวันนี้ผมได้รับเลือกให้เป็น AmbassaDiver ผมเลยรู้สึกว่าเป็นสิ่งที่พิเศษมาก

What are your goals for the next 12 months?
เป้าหมายของคุณในอีก 12 เดือนข้างหน้าคืออะไร
My main focus is my KodpaKodTalay project. I aim to put all I have into it for the next 18 months. I want to devote as much time and effort to it as possible: management, graphic content, meeting people from different areas of the country and learning about their environment. I know it’s going to be a very tiring year, but I am very excited to see where it takes us.
เป้าหมายหลักของผมคือโครงการกอดป่ากอดทะเล 18 เดือนนับจากนี้ ผมตั้งใจจะทุ่มเททุกอย่างไปที่โครงการนี้ ผมตั้งใจจะให้เวลาและความพยายามให้กับโครงการนี้ให้มากทึ่สุด ทั้งในเรื่องการบริหารจัดการ การออกแบบเนื้อหาและกราฟฟิคต่างๆ การพบปะผู้คนจากภาคส่วนต่างๆที่เกี่ยวข้องในประเทศไทย และเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกบสภาพแวดล้อมในพื้นที่นั้นๆ ผมรู้ว่าปีนี้จะเป็นปีที่เหนื่อยมากแน่ๆ แต่ผมก็ตื่นเต้นมากที่จะได้ทำ และได้เรียนรู้จากมัน
