Congratulations to PADI Divemaster Seth Greenspan, worldwide winner of the 2011 PADI Sea the Change Conservation Contest for his submission Documenting Global Coral Reef Restoration. The video details a decline in healthy coral reefs and a creative restoration process. He won $5000 US for his efforts and netted a $5000 US donation from the PADI organization to Project AWARE Foundation on his behalf. Thanks to everyone for sharing and voting on the videos. Says Greenspan, “I’m grateful for the opportunity PADI has given me to share the message about coral reef health. I’ve been working on a documentary about the perilous state of coral reefs and plan to finish producing it with the prize money.”
The PADI Sea the Change contest encouraged everyone to grab a video camera and show how they were protecting and conserving the underwater environment. The response was exciting as the contest page saw hundreds of thousands of hits and participants submitted hundreds of entries documenting projects ranging from beach cleanups to public service announcements and more.
The contest also harnessed the power of social media sites like Facebook and YouTube to spread the conservation and awareness message while keeping scuba diving at the forefront of people’s minds.
