Not only does the gear you have determine the quality of dive you will have, what bag you carry it in also counts. With the right dive luggage, you will remain organized and your gear will remain protected. Whether you are traveling to the other side of the world to a new and exciting exotic dive location or you are taking a quick trip to the coast, you have to ensure that all of the basics are down before you take off for your adventure.
If you are on the market for a new gear bag, keep a look out for certain features when you are making the decision. The use of the bag will determine the type you settle on. A bag for travel will undoubtedly be much different from a bag you use to store all of your gear in during the off-season. Bags should have a sturdy design that holds the bulky dive gear, and they should have large, corrosion-proof zippers. With heavy contents and some residual salt water, you will want zippers that can stand the stress they will be put under so your dive gear doesn’t come tumbling out.
When looking for a bag that will make the trip with you to your next dive location, look for these features.
- Weight supporting straps – Gear bags get heavy. Be sure that the straps are heavily reinforced.
- Drain holes – If you are going to throw wet gear into the bag be sure that it’s not a breeding ground for mold and mildew.
- Removable pockets – Some of the gear you pack may be fragile and you won’t want to check it with your baggage.
- Extra space – Don’t risk jamming all of your equipment in to one bag. Give your gear some space. You’ll most likely end up using it.
- Good warranty – Bags get a lot of wear. Look for a good warranty so you get your money’s worth.
A bag that is going to be used for storage should have some of the same qualities, but some of the extra conveniences aren’t necessary. If you want a separate bag for travel and storage, look for a solid, sturdy bag for storage that will protect your gear and have extra space for you to add equipment as your diving experience grows.
