As ocean lovers with an adventurous mentality, it’s not unusual to find scuba divers who also love to surf. The thrill of exploring an underwater world is undeniable, but being able to combine that with a decent surf can make for a very, very good day.
As a scuba diver or surfer traveling to some of the best waters of the world, you will want to experience as much as you possibly can. Whether the group you are traveling with are split between the two or you simply want to take advantage of both activities, you don’t have to put one on the back burner. There are plenty of amazing destinations across the world that boast beautiful dives and amazing waves.
Shelley Beach, Manly, Australia
Sydney, Australia – Australia has some great scuba diving and surfing in general, but Sydney definitely won’t leave you disappointed. Popular dive sites like Shelly Beach, Bare Island and Camp Cove will offer just as many great underwater sights as those you’ll experience on your board in nearby spots. Shelly Beach, located in Manly, is a great dive that boasts blue gropers, wobbegongs, rays and more. A short walk around the bend with your board and you’re ready to paddle out.
Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head, Hawaii
Oahu, Hawaii – There is no doubting Hawaii’s reputation as surf central, but as you take a tank underwater you will be able to see the variety that this part of Hawaii offers. Oahu offers a great selection of wreck dives, marine life encounters and drift diving. Mamala Bay is a popular dive site which you will likely visit if scuba diving here. Additionally, don’t miss out on hot surf spots like the iconic Waikiki Beach or Waimea Bay.
Kuta, Bali, Indonesia
Bali, Indonesia – This Island is surrounded by amazing waters for both diving and surfing. Don’t miss the USAT Liberty Wreck, a 119-meters/390-foot US Army transport ship sitting at just 30 metres/100 feet in Tulamben or Kuta beach to catch some easy waves for novice surfers.
Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Guanacaste, Costa Rica – This oasis of biodiversity is as laidback and stunning as you’d hope it would be. Playas del Coco is one of the best gulfs for diving, with options for divers of all levels. Tamarindo is perfect for finding all things surf. You won’t be hard-pressed to find a board to rent or a lesson or two.
Boulders Beach Nature Reserve, Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town, South Africa – The water may be cold, but that makes it much more exhilarating. Big waves are pushed from storms between Cape Town and the Antarctic, creating an uninterrupted line all the way from Cape Horn. False Bay is just south of Cape Town and the slightly warmer waters offer kelp forests and rocky walls.
Algarve Coast, Portugal
Algarve, Portugal – You won’t want to leave this paradise no matter your activity of choice. With two coasts catching swells, there will always be great surf somewhere nearby. Check out the eastern edge of the cliff of Atalaia, where a natural rock wall meets the concrete pier of the port, drawing many different species close.
Southern California, USA – These sunshine beaches hold numerous classic surf set-ups, while the degree of swell exposure, to storms from both the North and South Pacific mean year-round swell. Lured by the unique beauty of the kelp forests and underwater canyons, divers also appreciate the good visibility.
