As much as we try and put it off, you simply can’t avoid cleaning. We all know just how harmful many of the cleaning products we use can be to the environment – but sometimes it’s hard to know what to do instead.

Luckily, there is an alternative.

It’s time to clear out your cleaning cupboard, and make room for these natural cleaning products that, either on their own or when mixed together, will do the job just as well.

Baking Soda

Baking soda has almost as many names as it does uses, so it’s a great addition to any household. As a natural cleaner it works wonders, so much so so you’ll ask yourself why you’ve been cleaning with chemicals all these years. Try adding ½ a cup to your toilet bowl before scrubbing and watch it work its magic.

Baking Soda

Vinegar

It might be a natural product but don’t let that fool you. Vinegar’s acidity makes it tough on bacteria though still gentle on the environment. It’s a great tool for getting rid of mildew and dirt and removing odours. Try mixing 1 cup of vinegar with 1 cup of water for a great glass cleaner.

Borax

Not to be confused with Boric Acid, Borax is a naturally occurring mineral known as sodium tetraborate. Borax can clean virtually anything around the house. The most commonly known use for borax is in homemade laundry detergent but you’ll find that mixing1/2 cup of borax with 2 cups of warm water is all you need to remove carpet stains.

Corn Starch

Corn Starch is commonly used as a thickening agent in soups and other foods. It’s this absorbent nature that makes it great for removing grease and oil marks from a whole host of surfaces.

Lemon

Lemon

A key ingredient in many food recipes, Lemon is also a key ingredient in many recipes for homemade cleaners. Like vinegar, it’s the acidity of lemon that makes it a great cleaner. Unlike many store-bought cleaning products, lemon is non-toxic and will leave your house smelling great. Try rubbing lemon on your shower doors to get them looking new again.

Salt

You can find salt in almost every kitchen, but we bet you didn’t think to add it to your cleaning supplies too? Salt is great for helping clean greasy pots and pans after cooking. Just sprinkle a layer over the grease and wipe it off wipe some paper towel or a dry cloth.

Olive Oil

You can use Olive oil for way more than just cooking! There are many ways to add it into your beauty regime as well as household tasks. That squeaky door? Try some olive oil before you reach for the chemicals.
