While celebrations of PADI Women’s Dive Day may have been a bit different this year, the outpouring of community participation and support was simply inspiring. On July 18th, divers from around the globe celebrated the 6th annual Women’s Dive Day online and in-person where possible.
Since 2015, nearly 4000 Women’s Dive Day events have taken place across 183 countries, in which divers came together to plant new coral nurseries, perform beach and underwater clean-ups, set a world record for the longest underwater female human chain, fundraise for breast cancer research and local women’s shelters – and, of course, to take their firsts breaths underwater. Over the years, PADI Women’s Dive Day has grown into a worldwide celebration that brings everyone together – not just women. The day fosters a global community that encourages divers of all genders, ages, races, backgrounds and abilities to safely and confidently explore and protect the underwater world. In doing so, the PADI family has changed thousands of lives, expanded the dive community, and made the underwater world more accessible to all.
While many of us celebrated digitally instead of in-person this year, there’s no doubt that we were able to highlight and strengthen our connections to each other and our connections to the ocean. Divers from around the world tuned in to 24 hours of Women’s Dive Day posts, videos, stories, and lives across PADI’s social channels. Many dive shops around the world also hosted their own online events, with informative webinars, inspiring lives, and fun happy hours. It was also wonderful to see that in some areas of the world – from Saudi Arabia to Mexico to Spain and beyond – there were successful in-person events that followed local regulations and safety guidelines. Thank you to everyone that participated in this global celebration!
Looking towards the future, 2021 will mark the 7th year of this historic celebration and, as the event has grown to be the largest single day of diving on the planet, we will expand our efforts to mobilize the entire dive community to take action for the ocean! Mark your calendars and invite your friends to join you in protecting the underwater world on July 17th, 2021. If PADI Women’s Dive Day 2020 has shown us anything, it is that there is a fantastic community of divers to connect with near and far and waters waiting for us to dive into when we can.
