How to Give a Dive Trip as a Gift

Every Week is shark Week.

One month after he lost his right leg to a tiger shark, while bodyboarding in Hawai’i, Mike Coots was back in the water. And now, 18 years later, shark advocacy has become Mike’s life mission.

A professional photographer and influential force in the surf community, Mike is committed to changing people’s perceptions about sharks and lobbying for their protection. Although a certified diver before he lost his leg, it’s only been in the last year that Mike realized the best way to save sharks was to get face to face with the same species that took his leg and share that story with others. Through the power of storytelling and his photography, Mike hopes to show people that sharks aren’t the mindless killers portrayed in the media.

You can’t comprehend the real beauty of sharks until you can look into their eyes and witness them in their natural environment.

"My underwater journey began back in 1979 on Spain "My underwater journey began back in 1979 on Spain's Costa Brava, when my parents took over Triton Diving Llafranc. I was just 8 years old when my dad took me for my first dive.

Jump to 2001, my Australian partner and I stepped into the family business, dedicating ourselves to delivering high-quality diver training. In 2018, I became an Instructor Trainer, helping guide Triton Diving into the next chapter.

Shortly after that my life took a profound turn after the sudden loss of my mum so Mark and I decided to relocate to Australia with our teenage kids. That's where I discovered a new passion - supporting children with special needs.

Last summer, one of those students redefined everything - Thomas, a 12 year old on the autism spectrum. Snorkeling was a struggle, but when I offered the option to try scuba in the pool and he took his first breath...he felt calm, focused and happy.

Through creative tools like mirrors, games and trust-building techniques, I helped him grow his confidence, both in the water and his daily life. Now he's training towards his Scuba Diver certification.

This inspired my partner and I to start M&M Jervis Bay, offering "Scuba Wellness" for people who are neurodiverse, managing anxiety, processing trauma or simply curious about being underwater. With one-on-one private pool sessions at our new rural property in Jervis Bay. No pressure, no noise and no rush - just a peaceful space where anyone can learn to breathe underwater and explore their own comfort level.

We can't wait to see where this takes us!"

Scuba diving has the power to break barriers — and Scuba diving has the power to break barriers — and Kirsty and Xander are a beautiful reminder that the underwater world truly is for everyone. 💙

After falling in love with diving on the Great Barrier Reef, they set out to earn their PADI Open Water Diver certifications during their honeymoon in the Philippines. Navigating a disability, a new environment, and an 18-metre descent could have been overwhelming. But as soon as they started their skills session, everything changed.

They discovered what many adaptive divers already know: with the right training, support, and mindset, scuba diving is a sport for all abilities. And what waited for them underwater was worth every step of the journey! Calm, freedom, and a world filled with life. 🪸

We’re honoured to share their experience during PADI Adaptive Diving Week and celebrate the divers, instructors, and communities proving every day that diving is more inclusive than ever.
