The best time of year to dive in Chile varies by season and location. The Chilean coastline is more than 4270 km/2650 miles long. Divers in Iquique may experience 23°C/72°F water, while divers in Punta Arenas drop into 7°C/45°F water — on the very same day.

Iquique, the “City of Eternal Spring,” has an almost tropical microclimate. Water temps reach 23°C/72°F in February and drop to a low of about 16°C/61.5°F in August. Meanwhile, in Punta Arenas, known as “the gateway to Antarctica,” water temperatures average 2°C/35.6°F and never get above 7°C/45°F.

Along the central coast of Chile, including the Santiago-adjacent towns of Quintay, Los Molles & Pichidangui, water temperatures typically range from 11°C/51°F in winter (June–August) to 14°C/57°F in summer (December–March).

Regional differences aside, the best time of year to dive in Chile is generally November through April. During these months, the seas tend to be calmer and visibility is at its peak.

October through May is Chile’s peak travel season, so book your accommodations and diving in advance — especially if you want to dive the Juan Fernández Archipelago, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. Access is limited to a fixed number of visitors per season, and dive boats fill up quickly.

For divers who prefer to avoid peak tourist season, April through August is optimal. The water is colder, but it’s also a good time to see some spectacular marine mammals.

The Best Time To See Whales in Chile

Chile is home to nearly 40% of the world’s whale and dolphin species. While in-water encounters are rare, it’s possible to see a variety of whales, dolphins, orcas and other cetaceans from the dive boat.

Here are the peak seasons to see different marine life.

  • Sperm Whales and Pilot Whales: Year-round.
  • Orcas: Year-round
  • Humpbacks: Pass by in March and April and again in September
  • Southern Right Whales: June through December
  • Blue Whales: September and April

Love the little stuff? April through November is a good time to spot smaller marine life, such as nudibranchs and seahorses, especially in colder water habitats.
