For many divers, the ideal dive trip includes fascinating marine life, learning new things, meeting interesting people and (of course) great diving. PADI Club™ members attending a recent Bonaire dive event got to experience all of the above.

PADI Club Total Club-Mersion 2026 took place at Buddy Dive Resort in Bonaire from 25 April to 2 May. As the name implies, the event was exclusively for PADI Club members and co-hosted by our very own Veronica (Vero) Coates (PADI Club Community Manager).

Strangers Became Fast Friends

The group was a mix of solo travelers and couples. Some were newer divers, and others had been diving for many years. But they all had one thing in common — a love for the underwater world.

“Many guests signed up for the trip because they hoped to find new dive buddies and connect with like-minded people,” said Vero. “The friendships started forming almost immediately. By the second day, it already felt like a group of friends rather than a collection of individual travelers. Watching those connections develop was one of my favorite parts of hosting the trip.”

Diver Eriel added, “What was especially excellent about this PADI Club-Mersion Event was the care, safety and personalized education opportunities. The group was able to get to know each other well over meals and dive debriefs. Having dived on larger boats with strangers, shifting dive buddies and changing guides, it really made all the difference.”

A PADI Club Gift Pack

Each guest received a PADI Club gift pack stuffed with goodies, including:

  • Event T-shirt
  • Water bottle
  • Sunglasses
  • Mobile phone strap
  • Dive whistle
  • Divers Alert Network (DAN) hat
  • PADI Club hat
  • Stream2Sea products
  • And, several fun surprises

“Guests really liked the Stream2Sea products, including reef-safe mineral sunscreen, reef-friendly skincare products and mask defog,” Vero remarked. “Everyone enjoyed having environmentally-conscious products to use throughout the week.”

Beautiful Diving in Bonaire

Scuba divers love Bonaire. The Caribbean island recently received 11 Reader’s Choice awards from Scuba Diving® magazine, including six first-place awards. If you know, you know. If you don’t, check out the video below.

Bonaire is known for massive schools of fish, healthy reefscapes and abundant macro life. PADI Club dive trip attendees explored some of Bonaire’s most iconic local sites including:

“Our guide, Ola, had an exceptional eye for spotting critters and macro life,” gushed Vero. “On the boat, Captain Paolo kept us entertained with stories about Bonaire’s reefs, culture and diving history. Together they helped make every dive memorable.”

The group stayed at Buddy Dive Resort, winner of 14 Scuba Diving magazine awards. Accommodation options include studios, one, two and three-bedroom apartments with a kitchen, bathroom and air conditioning.

Educational and Conservation Activities

The dive event also included educational activities, starting with a Peak Performance Buoyancy clinic. The clinic was especially beneficial for newer divers and those getting back in the water after time away. Experienced divers could check their weighting and fine-tune their skills.

“The clinic set the tone for the week,” Vero explained. “Everyone got their buoyancy dialed in before exploring Bonaire’s reefs. Throughout the week, divers told me they reduced their air consumption, felt more relaxed and were able to spend more time enjoying the underwater environment instead of adjusting their gear.”

The Fish ID seminar also received rave reviews from guests. After learning to identify different species, divers took part in an underwater photography scavenger hunt. “It sparked a lot of discussion among the group and gave everyone a deeper appreciation for the marine life we were seeing,” Vero noted.

The Reef Renewal presentation was described by guests as informative and inspiring. Divers learned about Bonaire’s coral nurseries, out-planting initiatives and reef restoration success stories.

“Understanding what’s being done to protect and restore local reefs gave everyone a greater connection to the destination and its marine environment,” Vero said. “After the presentation, two guests were inspired to participate in a Reef Renewal Discover Dive experience.”

“The divers worked directly with the coral nursery team to clean nursery structures and care for coral fragments,” mentioned Vero. “They plan to return to Bonaire, so they will be able to see the progress of their restoration work.”

New Achievements and Adventures

Topside, a scuba-themed trivia night sparked friendly competition and plenty of laughs. The group also visited the flamingo sanctuary, donkey sanctuary and experienced one of Bonaire’s national holidays.

“Being in Bonaire during Dia di Rincon, an island-wide celebration, was a particularly special experience,” Vero added. “We got to see more of Bonaire’s culture, enjoy a parade and explore beyond the dive sites. It really added another layer to the trip.”

Other guests opted in to new adventures. One diver completed their Enriched Air (Nitrox) Diver certification and another tried a DPV (diver propulsion vehicle) for the first time.

Diver Mark exclaimed, “I am still on a high from this experience! The buoyancy clinic on the first morning was a game-changer for me. All the knowledge and practice finally clicked and will stick with me forever. Every day was buoyancy heaven with no struggle at all, and I improved my air consumption.

“The underwater landscapes, flora and fauna were diverse and amazing.  The underwater experience was blended with fun daily activities like trivia and photography contests and trips to the local towns and countryside. My leaders and fellow group members were lovely, and I enjoyed my time with all of them. I also did my first night dive, which was totally awesome.”

Dive Trip Myths and Misconceptions

A common misconception about dive trips is that you need to know someone before signing up. In reality, many divers join group trips because they want to meet new dive buddies. The Bonaire Club-Mersion event was a great example of how quickly a shared love of diving can turn strangers into a supportive community.

In addition, Club events are designed to make divers feel comfortable, whether they were recently certified, are getting back in the water after a break or have years of experience.

“Our PADI dive professionals carefully choose the dive sites and pair divers appropriately based on experience and comfort levels,” Vero added. “Whether someone earned their certification recently or hasn’t dived in several years, Club events provide a welcoming community.”

There is also plenty of flexibility built into the experience. While organized dive trips often include a full itinerary of dives, presentations, activities and social events, guests can choose how much they want to participate. Some divers may join every activity, while others may prefer to relax, explore independently or add extra dives.

“Most organized dive trips offer a full itinerary, but guests always have the freedom to participate as much or as little as they like,” Vero continued.
