The Dominican Republic is considered one of the best places to dive in the Caribbean and one of the best scuba destinations for families. The water temperature is consistently warm, ranging from 24-29°C/75-84°F year-round with visibility averaging 18-27 meters/60-90 feet throughout the year. The best time of year to dive the Dominican Republic is arguably June to September, but that’s also hurricane season.
Here’s what you need to know.

The Best Time To Dive the Dominican Republic: June to September
The Dominican Republic is a popular winter escape for people in the Northern Hemisphere. Starting in June, crowds start to thin out while underwater visibility peaks.
June is also the start of hurricane season, which can last into October. According to data dating back to 1851, August and September are when hurricanes are most likely to hit the Dominican Republic. That said, the water is generally calm this time of year, which extends visibility to 30 meters/100 feet.
Shoulder Season: May & November
If you’re looking for fewer crowds but want to avoid hurricane season, consider booking a trip in May or November. May is the start of rainy season, which continues into November, but you’re going to get wet anyway, right? Of the two months, November has a slightly lower average rainfall.
The Best Time To Swim With Whales: December to March
The Dominican Republic is one of the few places in the world where you can get in the water with humpback whales. Each year, from December through March, up to 5,000 whales visit to mate and calve. This time of year is also when seas on the northern coast are the most calm.
Even if you don’t book an excursion to Silver Bank, it’s possible to hear whales singing underwater while you dive. Air temperatures are a comfortable 21-26°C/70-80°F and water temps are between 24-26°C/75-79°F.
