PADI’s newest limited-edition certification card captures one of the ocean’s most mesmerizing spectacles. Featuring an image by author, travel writer and underwater photographer Pier Nirandara, the Motion of the Ocean certification card celebrates the mystery and movement of life beneath the surface.

The image on the card shows a sweeping aggregation of mobula rays in the Sea of Cortez, Mexico. Suspended in dark blue water and moving in a hypnotic swirl, the rays seem to form a living current. It’s the kind of image that stops you in your tracks, then invites you to look closer.

The Story Behind the Shot

The photograph was taken in the Sea of Cortez, a place Jacques Cousteau famously called, “The Aquarium of the World.” For Nirandara, the scene was unforgettable not just because of its scale, but because of the feeling it created.

She told us, “Mobula rays migrate through in massive aggregations, and when you drop into the water with them, there’s something beautifully hypnotic about the way they move in a swirling vortex.”

That sense of wonder is exactly what makes the image so compelling. The rays appear almost endless, rising and folding through the water in a coordinated flow. Rather than a single, dramatic subject, the power of the shot comes from collective movement.

Meet Underwater Photographer Pier Nirandara

Nirandara is an author, travel writer, underwater photographer and the founder of Immersiv Expeditions. Born and raised in Bangkok, she spent countless days in Thailand’s waters, developing a deep respect for the sea that became closely tied to her love of storytelling.

Today, she splits her time between Cape Town, Los Angeles and Thailand, following stories that live at the intersection of ocean culture and conservation. Her work has appeared in major publications including BBC, Forbes, Condé Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, AFAR and Lonely Planet.

“I think of what I do as the emotional science of wonder,” she explained, “using storytelling and imagery to make people fall in love with the ocean, so they want to protect it.”

That phrase feels especially fitting for the Motion of the Ocean card. It’s not just a beautiful underwater scene; it’s an invitation to feel awe, and through that awe, build connection.

A Life Changed by the Ocean

When asked about her favorite place to dive, Nirandara points to South Africa — a place that transformed not only her perspective, but the course of her life.

“It was actually a trip to dive the Sardine Run that changed everything for me,” she said. “I flew back to Los Angeles, quit my job as a Hollywood film executive and pursued a life of underwater storytelling full-time.”

That leap has led to remarkable work, including documenting the ancient shark-calling traditions of Papua New Guinea through a project supported by the Save Our Seas Foundation. She has also joined renowned ocean advocates, such as Dr. Sylvia Earle and Fabien Cousteau, on initiatives that blend exploration with advocacy. Still, for Nirandara, impact matters more than accolades.

“What matters most is when someone tells me a story or image moved them to pay closer attention to the ocean,” she said.

A Reminder of What’s Worth Protecting

At its heart, the Motion of the Ocean certification card is a celebration of that attention — of slowing down long enough to be moved by the ocean and everything it holds.

Nirandara’s message to divers is simple and powerful: “Get in the water!” She believes firsthand experience creates the kind of relationship that leads to responsibility. “Without a sense of relationship, there’s no sense of responsibility,” she remarked.

To those who carry this card, she offers one final thought: “May it be a reminder of what lies beneath, and of everything worth protecting. I hope it inspires you to take your own giant stride into the unknown.”
