Welcome, fellow ocean enthusiasts, to a truly inspiring story of resilience, personal growth, and the transformative power of scuba diving. Today, we have the privilege of sharing the remarkable journey of Geoff Robinson, a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, who made the courageous decision to change his career in pursuit of better mental health and rediscovered the wonders of the underwater world alongside his son. Join us as we delve into Geoff’s story, tracing his path from fear to passion and from self-discovery to a profound connection with his son.

Geoff’s love for scuba diving began in 2003 while on holiday with his wife in the enchanting island paradise of Mauritius. Little did he know that this experience would set in motion the start of a life-changing adventure. However, there was a twist: Geoff was initially scared of the water. He confessed during our conversation that he would hear the Jaws theme playing in his head whenever he entered the aquatic realm.

But something remarkable happened when Geoff decided to confront his fear head-on and embark on his PADI Open Water Diver certification. Once he took that plunge and experienced the weightlessness and serenity beneath the waves, he became hooked, and in 2005, Geoff obtained his PADI Divemaster certification, further deepening his connection to the underwater realm.

However, Geoff and his wife celebrated the birth of their son in 2008, and this led him to put his diving adventures on hold, until 2020, when his son expressed an interest in scuba diving. During this time Geoff was struggling with his mental health, he spoke about the pressures and stress from his corporate job, which had taken a toll on his well-being, leaving him feeling overwhelmed and disconnected. It was during this difficult period that he realized he needed to make a change.

He confided, “There was a time when my mental health suffered greatly. The daily pressures and demands of my corporate career left me feeling empty and disconnected from myself and those around me. It was a dark period, and I knew something had to change.”

Diving had always brought Geoff joy and a sense of peace, so he made the decision to prioritize his mental health and rekindle his passion for the underwater world. In 2020, when his son embarked on his Junior Open Water Diver certification, Geoff saw an opportunity to dive back into his beloved hobby and seize a chance for personal healing and growth.

Geoff’s decision to enrol in an Instructor Development Course (IDC) was not only to set an example for his son but also to regain control of his mental well-being. Through diving, he found solace, a space to quiet his mind, and a renewed sense of purpose.

As Geoff went through the IDC, he experienced the transformative power of diving firsthand. The underwater world became his sanctuary, providing a refuge from the pressures of everyday life. He found that the rhythm of breathing underwater helped him find calm and tranquillity, and the vibrant marine life served as a reminder of the beauty that exists beyond the stresses and challenges of the surface world. “It was clear Geoff was truly enjoying the Instructor Examination (IE),” said Erika Hoffman, his Instructor Examiner. “Many people find the IE process very stressful, but Geoff was taking it in his stride, knowing that what he was hoping to achieve had transformed his life for the better, for good.”
