What Is a PADI Certification Card?
A PADI certification card is your proof that you’ve successfully completed a PADI course. Dive centers, resorts and liveaboards around the world can use it to verify your certification level before allowing you to participate in dives or continuing education.
Today, certification cards are available in two formats:
- PADI eCardsTM, which are stored online, in your PADI profile, and are available through the PADI App.
- Physical certification cards, made from recycled plastic and designed to travel wherever diving takes you.
All new PADI certifications now include an eCard, giving you instant access to your certification wherever you are. Many divers also choose to carry a physical card as a backup, particularly when traveling to remote destinations where internet access may be limited. You can also purchase a bundle that includes both formats at a discounted price.
What Do the Different PADI Card Colors Mean?
One of the most common questions divers ask is whether different color certification cards represent different levels of training.
The answer is yes — but not always in the way people expect.
Blue Cards
Blue is the standard color for recreational PADI certification cards.
If you complete a recreational certification — such as Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver or a Specialty course — you’ll typically receive a blue certification card unless another design or special collection applies.
The blue card has become an instantly recognizable symbol within the global diving community.
Gold Cards
Gold certification cards are also issued for recreational certifications, but they’re reserved for divers who complete their training through a PADI Five Star Dive Center or Resort.

Black Cards
Black certification cards are reserved exclusively for PADI Professional certifications.
